International Mine Action Standards

104 7

    Background

    • Concerns over the presence of mines in various regions throughout the world, prompted a series of consultations regarding mine action in the late 1990s, involving affected nations, stakeholders and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). The International Mine Action Standards were created and endorsed by the U.N. Inter-Agency Group in 2001.

    Procedures

    • Some of the operating procedures and information the IMAS include are: assessing whether local parties have the capacity to effectively and safely carry out demining operations, how to properly survey regions and locate ordnances and mines, and how to ensure mines are safely removed and disarmed.

    Training

    • Organizations such as the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and UNMAS, provide training in regards to utilizing the IMAS.

    Affected Nations

    • As of 2010, nations which continue to have unexploded ordnance and landmines in their territories include Angola, Afghanistan, Croatia, Colombia and Vietnam, amongst others.
