About 50 or 60 years ago people had a fairly good idea which ice cream flavors were most favored by the American public. Now precise information is available. On the basis of a recent survey, the International Ice Cream Association has published an authoritative list of the most popular ice cream flavors in America. - Vanilla is America's favorite ice cream flavor.delicious ice cream in cone image by Joyce Wilkes from Fotolia.com
Vanilla ice cream is the overwhelming favorite of the American populace. It was the choice of 29 percent of the people in the survey. This figure roughly corresponds to actual ice cream sales in supermarkets, where vanilla constituted 29.3 percent of ice cream sales in 1999. Ice creams employ either natural or artificial vanilla. Its characteristic flavor blends well with the fruits used in such treats as sundaes and banana splits. This has contributed to its popularity. - Chocolate rates second in popularity.chocolate ice-cream image by AGphotographer from Fotolia.com
Chocolate ice cream tends to occupy second place, both in surveys and sales. In the survey of the International Ice Cream Association, eight percent of the populace voted for chocolate, and chocolate captured 12.2 percent of the 1999 ice cream sales in supermarkets. Chocolate is also a popular flavor in dispensers of fast-food stores and restaurants. - Some people believe that fruit-flavored ice creams taste best. Some like cherry, while others prefer orange sherbet. Many Filipinos prefer mango, but in America, strawberry is by far the most popular fruit-flavored ice cream. Some ice cream companies use natural strawberries to flavor their ice cream, while others use artificial flavoring.
- Naples is a colorful Italian city with a colorful history. So the colorful ice cream with separate white, pink and brown sections is rightly called Neapolitan. Since its three components are the perennially popular vanilla, strawberry and chocolate, it is not surprising that Neapolitan occupies fifth place in the International Ice Cream Association survey, right after strawberry.
- Nut flavors did not fare too well in the survey. Pecan praline placed 10th and chocolate almond placed 12th. But butter pecan and maple nut did not make the top 15. Butter pecan fared better in 1999 supermarket sales, capturing 4.3 percent of the market.
