ABOUT THE WEST INDIAN LABOR DAY PARADE: Every Labor Day, the West Indian American Labor Day Parade is a colorful West Indian Carnival that kicks off the end of summer and beginning of September. It's an unbelievable event, with raucous bands, lively dancing, costumes that range from scant to incredibly elaborate feather "Indian" outfits.
You can hear traditional mas bands, steel drum music. Watch floats. Get in the swing. One of the Big Apple's biggest, and most popular parades, this celebration of West Indian culture draws spectators from all over.
"The annual event has become the largest cultural festival in the country, drawing over three million people," according to the Brooklyn Borough President's office in 2013.
Some of the Caribbean islands represented in the parade include Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Jamaica, Grenada, St Vincent, and others.
The festivities begin Thursday August 29 and run for five days!
Special events celebrating the special day will include “Caribbean Woodstock” featuring Soca, Calypso, Reggae, Zouk, Hip-Hop and Latin music; a masquerade competition; a “Stay in School” talent show; the annual Brass Fest; and a performance by the New York University's NYU Steelband.
WHEN IS THE PARADE? The annual West Indian Labor Day Parade will be held on September 1, 2014, starting at 11 a.m.
Crowds begin to line up well before that.
WHERE is the Caribbean American Labor Day Parade?: It will go down Eastern Parkway from Utica Avenue, ending at Grand Army Plaza.
WHAT is the Caribbean American Labor Day Parade?: Expect to see colorful floats, incredible Carnival costumes, a cacophony of music, politicians, school and community groups, Caribbean entertainment stars, millions of onlookers, and many food vendors selling West Indian delicacies.
WHO is in the Caribbean American Labor Day Parade?: An estimated 600,000 or more people of Caribbean-American heritage live in New York City.
Famous Americans with Caribbean roots include American founding father Alexander Hamilton and contemporary author/journalist Malcolm Gladwell.
