Cardiac MRI Certification
- All physicians or technicians using MRIs must be accredited by the American College of Radiology. Radiologists must be board-certified in radiology by the American Board of Radiology, American Osteopathic Board of Radiology or an equivalent school. They must also complete 300 supervised hours of MRI operation within the previous 36 months.
- MRI equipment must meet federal and state requirements. These requirements include specifications of maximum static magnetic strength, maximum rate of change of magnetic field strength, maximum radio frequency power deposition and maximum auditory levels. Adherence to these equipment requirements are important to protect the subjects, physicians and technicians.
- Similar to restaurant grades, quality control is an important part of cardiac MRI certification. All facilities applying for accreditation must maintain a documented quality control program, which assesses relative changes in system performance.
