DIY Mezzanine
- 1). Consult a structural engineer to determine what materials would best suit the area you are building in. For example, wood, aluminum or steel materials can be used to build an indoor mezzanine, but may require structural support in the way of steel beams or columns, depending on how heavy the mezzanine will be. Steel columns are durable, and strong enough to support the weight of a mezzanine floor.
- 2). Obtain a building permit if necessary. Many businesses consider building mezzanines as opposed to moving to a larger office. If this is the case, you'll need to obtain a building permit before you start the process. Also consider the state building codes, and make sure you build according to the guidelines stipulated.
- 3). Select the flooring material. Mezzanine flooring material such as 38mm chipboard is commonly used. You can, however, also choose from heavy-duty materials, such as chequerplate steel or steel mesh panels.
- 4). Plan on building a stairwell with a railing, and lining the mezzanine with a railing. Railings can protect the lower and mezzanine floors from safety hazards associated with falling objects.
- 5). Calculate the amount of time it will take to build the mezzanine. If you are building a mezzanine in an office, this will result in lost wages and business hours. Setting a realistic time schedule and budget will keep your do-it-yourself mezzanine project on schedule.
