106 25

Name:

Casey.

Species:

Green Cheeked Conure (Pyrrhura molinae.) Casey is a Fancy Yellow Sided color mutation. (With a maroon belly!)

Sex:

Unknown.

Age:

Between 1 and 2 years.

Favorite Foods:

Casey has a big appetite for such a small little bird! For breakfast, his favorites include Blackberries, Blueberries, Strawberries, and warm Egg biscuits. For lunch every day, he feasts on grapes, apples, sunflower and safflower seeds, and peanut butter and jelly.

For dinner, Casey likes grilled steak, fish, cheeseburgers, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and broccoli. "Casey will try just about anything, but he will not even touch pork of any kind, such as bacon, hot dogs, pork chops or ham" says his mom, Linny. "He must be a meat and potato dude."

Favorite Toys:

According to Linny, "Casey will throw balls at you to catch and loves anything that has a bell attached to it. But once he gets his rubber ducky in place, he really goes after it."

Favorite Perches:

Linny says that Casey's favorite perch is his rope perch that is attached to his play yard. "He loves listening to the radio and also his favorite cartoons so we keep the TV on as well. When we are gone he listens to classical music. He'll dance when music is playing. When tired he goes behind his cage where his cover is on the back and sleeps during the day between the cage and the blanket cover. He loves being incognito and you have to call him to come out."

Dislikes:

Casey's biggest pet peeves are balloons and the family dog and cat.

"We call him little chicken hawk." Linny says. "The dog and the cat just disappear when he is on my lap." Casey isn't afraid to let people know when he is irritated. "He will growl at you or anyone who gets near his food while he is eating." says Linny. "He is not afraid of anything except loud noises and balloons!"

Special Talents:

Casey is a multi-talented bird, indeed! According to Linny, he will catch a ball and yell "Yay!" when he succeeds. He also likes to yell "Birdies!" whenever he sees wild birds in the yard, and will mimic the calls of the Black Birds that come to visit. He is also potty trained, and is an accomplished singer and dancer.

Life with Casey:

Linny found Casey at a pet shop when she was dropping her dog off to be groomed. "I walked around and always went to look at the birds because I grew up with them and have had them most of my life." Lindy says. "Casey just happened to be in a cage when I went and looked at them and he was really showing off to me when I was playing with him."

Later that day, Linny returned to the store to pick up her dog, and brought her daughter with her to meet Casey. "I really think it was love at first sight." she says. "I think Casey had me at hello."

After buying Casey, a new cage, and tons of accessories, Linny returned home to a husband who was none too happy about sharing the house with a bird. "My stubborn husband would always complain about having a bird because of the messes they make" Lindy jokes. "I didn't care since I am the one who really takes care of all of them -- my husband and daughter, and the dog and cat too!"

Since bringing Casey home, Linny says that her husband has grown to love Casey to bits. "He truly is a remarkable bird" she says, "Casey has made such a difference in my life and helped me through an addiction I had. Having him everyday in my life seems is so satisfying and gave me the strength I needed in my time of crisis. He makes me feel so loved, unconditionally."

That's why Casey is this week's Bird of the Week. He shows us all that a little love from a feathered friend can go a long, long way. Congratulations, Casey!
