Bistrô Ananã
Pará-born chef Sofia Bendelak roamed the world and worked in the fashion industry before opening Bistrô Ananã in a quiet street of the historic district in Manaus.
There's nothing quite like Bistrô Ananã - whose name is the Tupi word for "sweet fruit". With ingredients fresh from the world's largest rainforest lying not far beyond the limits of the historic district, Sofia Bendelak creates a delicate balance of culinary accents.
The restaurant design, which evokes a ship, is softly lit with candles. Veja Manaus, which voted Sofia Bendelak as Chef of the Year in 2007 and Bistrô Ananã as the Best Place for Couples in 2008, recommends you book for Valentine's Day (June 12) two weeks in advance if you don't want to miss the chef's aphrodisiac specials.
Just don't get too attached to any great sounding dishes. Sofia Bendelak renews her menu often, and the barred sorubim paté or the green açaí gazpacho may be gone. Let the Amazon cornucopia and the chef's prolific creativity surprise you.
