What Do You Get From a Vegan Condom?
Latex, by far the most widely used material in love glove, is manufactured in a process that involves the use of casein, a type of protein derived from milk. As the principles of veganism put it, food and products that involve the use of animal byproducts should be avoided, which unfortunately, means counting out latex love glove as well.
In an effort to make their love glove more appealing to this niche, a number of enterprising companies have set out to substitute casein with plant-based ingredients, making them animal and vegan friendly.
Here we look at the skinny of vegan condoms and see if they're worth the buy and any different from good old regular love sock.
Price
VeganCondoms come at average prices, costing just about the same as regular love sock on the market. The price tag of a VeganCondom however, will vary from brand to brand, but if it's any consolation, only a few brands offer true vegan condoms, so choosing shouldn't be too difficult.
This brings us to the next factor to consider.
Accessibility
Since VeganCondoms are still so new, with only a few manufacturers making real vegan condoms, buying them from a traditional brick-and-mortar drug store or 7-11 may be difficult. Glyde Condoms, which are officially recognized by The VeganCondoms, are best obtained online. The same goes for RFSU, another brand recognized by another vegan organization.
Other €big brand€ love sock makers, like Durex, claim to have condoms formulated as vegan-friendly, but they are unregistered with vegan groups. They are however, easier to find offline.
Performance
There is absolutely no reason why vegan condoms will not perform as sufficiently as any regular latex condom does, whether for vaginal intercourse or any other type of sexual activity. If the issue of lubrication is a question, just be sure to use a vegan-approved lubricant.
The Bottom Line
Aside from the non-use of the milk protein casein, very little separates VeganCondoms from regular love sock. Just remember that if you're a vegan and insist on using VeganCondoms despite not having them, then by all means, abstain from sexual intercourse instead of taking the risk. Remember that safe sex should be your primary concern, not staying in line with your philosophical beliefs.
