The cost of changing an individual surname is $149.04 (Canadian), according to the Government of Nova Scotia Web site. Each additional applicant thereafter is required to pay $22.41 to the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.
Along with detailed birth certificates and immigration documents (if born outside of Canada), marriage certificates or a certification of adoption may be required, depending on the circumstances and individual situation.
Only a parent or legal guardian of the child can petition a surname change. Therefore, you must have proof that you have legal guardianship over the child.
