How to Make Your Own Crossword Puzzle for Kids
- 1). Write down a list of your child's interests and what you want to accomplish with the puzzle. Take into account the child's age when developing the clues.
- 2). Find a website that creates crossword puzzles for free. In some crossword puzzle creation programs, you'll need to download a trial version to your computer before adding clues. Other programs allow you to input the words directly to the website.
- 3). Follow the directions on the website, and give the puzzle a title. Make a list of words and clues. Clues can be either fill-in-the-blank, rhyming, riddles or definitions. Clues can be up to 255 characters long. Some sites have you enter the word, then type a slash mark to separate the word from the clue. Some sites need only a blank space between the word and the clue. Others will have a spreadsheet format, where you fill in the word and then type the clue beside it.
- 4). Create a grid size for the puzzle based on the number of clues you have. A 15-by-15 grid is suitable for elementary school age children. Most software programs have a default setting for grid size and size of each block. Unless you have many words and clues, the default setting should be fine.
- 5). Print out a copy of the puzzle and check it for errors. Print as many copies as needed.
