    • 1). Measure a 4-foot-8 inch square area. Mark the area with wooden stakes placed at each corner.

    • 2). Shovel the dirt out of the marked area until the depth of the hole is a consistent 8 inches. Pour gravel into the hole until the top level of the gravel is at the 6-inch mark.

    • 3). Prepare a batch of concrete by following the manufacturer's recommendations. You will need a large bucket, a stir stick and water for most products. Pour the concrete into the excavated area until the concrete reaches the top of the hole and is level. Allow the concrete to cure and harden according to the instructions from the manufacturer. This is your footer.

    • 4). Prepare a batch of mortar mix by following the manufacturer's recommendations. You will need a large bucket, a stir stick and water for most products.

    • 5). Draw a 4-foot-6 inch square centered on the footer. Place bricks around the marked square to create a solid outline. The bricks should be spaced one-half inch apart to allow room for the mortar. Bond the bricks to each other and the footer using the mortar and a trowel. Place another layer of bricks on top of the first; bond the bricks together. This layer should be offset from the previous layer. Continue adding layers until the square is four bricks high. Allow the mortar to dry.

    • 6). Fill the brick outline with gravel leaving 4 inches of space at the top of the square. Pour concrete mixture into the square until it is even with the top of the fourth layer of bricks. Allow the concrete to cure. This is your hearthslab.

    • 7). Cover the entire surface of the outline and hearthslab with bricks. Bond the bricks together with mortar and allow them to dry.

    • 8). Place another three layers of bricks around the back and sides of the barbeque. Center a steel plate on top of the brick outline. Mortar around the plate and add three more layers of bricks around the back and sides.

    • 9). Center a steel grate on top of the brick outline. Mortar around the grate and add five more layers of bricks around the back and sides.
