- 1). Visit or contact a paternity testing center. Paternity testing centers in, or that serve Pennsylvania, include the DNA Diagnostics Center and Genelex. These centers can often either test you or disburse a paternity test for you to complete at home and submit at a later date.
- 2). Comply with the center's requirements for paternity testing. Fill out any paperwork the center requests, along with your reasons for wanting paternity testing. This information can help the center determine which type of paternity testing you need. For instance, legal paternity tests are needed to establish proof that you are or are not the father of the child in question.
- 3). Obtain the required sample from yourself, the child and the mother, if possible. The mother's DNA is not required to determine results, however, it might result in quicker and more accurate test results. Although DNA can be obtained in many ways, most tests ask that you scrape the inside of the cheek with a swab. The swab will collect the essential testing information needed to determine if the child is yours.
- 4). Send the swabs to the testing-center headquarters following their instructions, if you received an at-home testing kit. If not, the center employee will handle the samples herself. The swabs will be sent for testing and the center will contact you with the results. Results typically take about a week, however, some centers offer rush-results, which might often take one to three days.
