How to Support Gay Marriages
- 1). Register to vote, then do your research before heading to the polls. Vote for candidates who not only support same-sex marriage, but who have the track record to prove it. Write letters to your elected officials expressing your beliefs.
- 2). Express your support of gay marriage when it comes up at work, at family gatherings or when you're hanging out with your friends. Explain your position calmly and tell why you believe same sex marriage should be legalized. Standing up for gay rights in this seemingly small way can have a massive ripple effect in your community.
- 3). Volunteer your time or donate your money to organizations, such as The Human Rights Campaign, that work full-time to legalize gay marriage.
- 4). Make yourself known as an ally if you're straight. Attend Pride festivals each June and get involved in community groups, social clubs or political organizations that support gay marriage. Legalizing gay marriage is an effort that requires straight and gay people to work together, so making your status as an ally known can bring opportunities for activism.
- 5). Approach your church leaders about conducting gay marriage or commitment ceremonies. Even if the ceremonies aren't legally recognized by your state, the support of even just one church sends a powerful message.
- 6). Stay abreast of the current legal and political news surrounding gay marriage. Share your knowledge and insights on social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. More and more people rely on social networking sites to learn and to keep up with current events.
