What You Need To Know About Any Detox Diet

105 10
Today, there is a lot of hype surrounding the benefits of the so-called detox diet. These range from weight loss to removing unwanted toxins from your body. The simple truth is that some of those claims are true, while some are not, so you should not believe all those claims, no matter how attractive they may seem.

For one, there is no single or best detox diet. Instead, there are many diets which are supposed to help your body detoxify. Without naming any certain one, some involve consuming only fruits and vegetables, in the form of either juices or shakes. Other regimens promote special formulations or powders, along with vitamins and minerals. There are plenty of other forms and variations out there.

Considering the concept of detoxification, however, it should be noted that our body already does this on a daily basis. Indeed, our liver and the entire digestive tract is involved in removing waste products. Even our skin removes some of them in the form of sweat. What any detox diet can do is simply to augment this process, or to help it along. Depending on our lifestyle, we can sometimes overwhelm our body's natural waste handling systems €" hence the need for detoxification.

Therefore, since we cannot really avoid ingesting, inhaling, and applying substances which contain toxins on our body (to do so, we would have to live in a sterilized world), detoxification really does have a role to play. In fact, medical experts find nothing wrong with doing it once in a while. However, there is currently no recommended frequency, or even an officially recommended diet, to help you detoxify. Large-scale studies about this are simply lacking €" hence, you see all the media hype.

Furthermore, there is no single test which can show you if you have been successful in removing those toxins. Even if you lose weight, it does not mean all the toxins are gone. True, there are blood tests which can show you a decrease in lactic acid and other chemicals, but they are expensive, inconvenient, and not routinely done by most people.

So since detoxification has its merits, and there are no recommendations for it, you can simply start by changing what you eat and drink. Antioxidants from fruits and vitamins are always going to help you, since they are medically proven to prevent cancers and aging. Also, increasing your intake of fiber and water will also help, since they allow regular bowel movements and dilution of toxins. They also allow more sweat production to remove more toxins. Finally, simply reducing your intake of processed foods and carbonated drinks will help, since you reduce the preservatives and chemicals which enter your body. There is really no need to go crazy on a detox diet.
