How to Troubleshoot Polaris Waverunner Engines

    • 1). Remove any visible obstructions (such as seaweed or trash) from the craft. Clean it thoroughly and then try to start it. Tangled or lodged debris is often the problem with most water vessels.

    • 2). Turn the key switch to start or press the ignition button (depending on the model). If the engine fails to start or starts very slowly, test the battery first using a voltmeter for appropriate connectivity. If the battery passes the test and the engine still won't start, check the spark plugs and wiring.

    • 3). Check the crank system. Conduct a spark plug test using a spark plug tester (available at any auto parts store).

    • 4). Remove the flame arrestor box from the carburetor (location will depend on the model). Look down the carburetor throat and open and close the throttle valve assembly several times. Ensure that no obstruction is evident. Conduct he same test with the choke valve assembly.

    • 5). Check the fuel and oil. If the fuel is waterlogged or old it will smell sour. The engine needs to be purged of all fuel if the fuel is bad.
