How to Replace a Serpentine Belt in a 1998 Malibu

    • 1). Open the hood on your 1998 Malibu and locate the serpentine belt diagram in the engine compartment. The belt diagram shows the correct routing of the serpentine belt, which is necessary for proper operation of the vehicle, and the location of the tensioner pulley.

    • 2). Place a 13mm box wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner to the left. The serpentine belt loosens around all of the pulleys.

    • 3). Slide the serpentine belt off of the alternator pulley and rotate the tensioner pulley back to the right. The alternator pulley is the uppermost pulley in the serpentine belt system.

    • 4). Wrap the belt around all of the pulleys except the alternator pulley.

    • 5). Move the tensioner pulley with the box wrench and slide the belt over the alternator pulley.

    • 6). Rotate the tensioner pulley back to its resting position to tighten the belt around all of the pulleys. The belt sits in the groove of each of the pulleys when properly installed.
