- 1). Disconnect the vacuum hose on the fuel-pressure regulator located on the fuel rail attached to the fuel injectors. Attach a hand-held vacuum pump to the regulator and apply approximately 25 inHG (inches of mercury--a measure of pressure) to the regulator. This will allow the stored fuel pressure to return to the fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using a 1/2-inch wrench from the set.
- 2). Position wheel chocks behind the front wheels. Lift and support the rear of the car with a floor jack and jack stands. Place the floor jack under the center differential and lift the Mustang until there is enough room for you to work comfortably under the car. Place the jack stands under the rear axle tubes and lower the car onto them.
- 3). Remove the plastic fuel-line retainers located on each of the fuel lines attached to the ends of the fuel filter. New retainers are supplied with the fuel filter. There is no need to worry about damaging the old ones during removal. Slide the fuel lines off the fuel filter.
- 4). Loosen the clamp that attaches the fuel filter to the filter bracket, and slide the old filter out of the bracket. Dispose of the old filter in the same manner you would dispose of a used oil filter.
- 5). Slide the new filter into the bracket, and tighten the clamp securely. Push the fuel lines onto the new filter, and insert new retainer clips. Pay attention to the direction of flow marked on the body of the fuel filter when you install it. The filter in the Mustang can be installed backwards which will result in serious performance loss.
- 6). Lower the vehicle and reinstall the battery cable and fuel-regulator vacuum line. Turn the ignition key to the run position, and back to the off position, three times to prime the fuel system. Start the engine and check for leaks.
