How To Play Magic The Gathering – Basics and Terminologies

Magic: The Gathering is one of the most popular card games now, played by youths, usually teenagers. What makes this game popular? How to play it?  Why do people like this game so much? Playing Magic: The Gathering is quite hard because there are so many terminologies and things to remember, but once you know how to play it you will memorize the moves and terms in no time, especially if you will play and talk to other players regularly.

Magic: The Gathering (also known as MTG or Magic) is a card game made by a math professor named Richard Garfield in 1993. Magic is a collectible card game which mean that you need to look and purchase them, some are cheap some are quite pricey (depends on what kind of Magic card). Magic can be played by two or more players. It is a battle of wizards or magicians called "Planewalkers". Planewalkers are mages who casts spells and summon monsters. Plainwalkers are shuffled in your deck, you're lucky if you picked them on your battle. It may sound simple, but there are certain rules to follow in this game.

Here are some of the rules that you need to follow in playing Magic: The Gathering
  1. All players will begin with 20 lives. If the player has a lower life rate or 0 life rate, he or she losses the game.
  2. Each player should have 60+ cards on his or her deck.
  3. The player will automatically lose the game if he or she ran out of cards.
  4. If the player receives 10 poison attacks or encounter, he or she will also lose the game.
  5. Each player should have 7 cards on hand. If he or she has extra cards, it should be discarded.

Here are some terminologies before you learn how to play magic the gathering:
  1. Library – Simply means the player's deck or set of cards. You deck should be faced down all the time, and before the game begin you need to randomly shuffle your cards first.
  2. Hand – These are the cards on your hands or the cards that you picked from the deck or library.
  3. Battlefield – This is where you put your cards or put your card into battle. This is where you will show your cards faced down on your battlefield to inflict damage to your enemy, to cast spell or to protect your cards.
  4. Graveyard – Each time your card loses, they will be placed or moved to the graveyard. The cards should be faced up so that players can examine the cards.
  5. Stack – This is where your spells or card are placed when the spell doesn't take effect yet. The cards in "The Stack" are revealed.
  6. Exile – If you have a spell or a card that is blocked or exiled by the enemy's card or spell. Your card will be placed in this area.

These are some of the important terms that you will encounter in playing Magic: The Gathering. Playing the game is also easy, you just need to know well your cards, know their abilities and spells, so that you can use them well or you will know where to use it.
