Eyestrain means different things to different people.
It can be experienced as burning, tightness, sharp pains, dull pains, watering, blurring, dry eye, headaches, and other sensations, depending on the person.
If you have any eye discomfort caused by viewing something, you can call it eyestrain.
Eye strain is caused by over using one or more of the eye muscles when the eye is kept in one position for a long period of time.
This is common for computer programmers, game players and particularly graphic designers who often focus on a screen or part of a screen for long periods of time.
It is interesting that eye strain happens faster while focusing on near distances rather than on far distances.
Data entry users need to take particular care because switching distances rapidly (such as looking backwards and forwards between a piece of paper and a computer screen) can hasten the onset of symptoms.
Some other common activities responsible for strained eyes are: reading; close craft work (such as needlework); watching television; and driving.
The sad fact is eye strain is becoming more common as not only do people spend hours in front of a screen during the working day.
They then come home and may watch anything from an hour to four or five hours of television per night, say a film and soap opera the time does quickly add up.
During this time you are once again focusing your eyes on a screen.
These concentrations minimise the movement of the eye without this movement the muscles become stained and can cause you to experience pain.
If you're just entering the prime years by being over 40 years old, eyestrain may be a sign that you need glasses for reading or you may just have dry eyes for some reason possibly a blocked tear duct for example.
Sometimes eyestrain is just a case of dry eyes.
The best solution and ongoing care is to see an optician for advise on your eyes and to stay informed about the facts, the remedies and the various changes that you can make to your life.
