Bathroom Lighting Concept Analysis
The image to the left is of a bathroom at the Rafayel Hotel. It has been designed in a contemporary fashion with the use of modern lighting to help complement this sleek new look. They have decided to use grey slate coloured mosaic tiles a few of the walls to create a feature wall and white washed the others to help bring out these feature walls. The use of dark colours and lack of organic natural lighting means that the artificial lighting must be efficient and suitable for tasks that require a high intensity of light such as tweezing or applying make-up.
Hence the use of high colour temperature LED bulbs around 6500k which is equivalent of day light are used in the ceiling spot lights to improve the light intensity creating a clean and clinical mood. Blue LED strip lighting is used on both sides of the mirror to help create a floating effect of the wall. The large wall mirror aids in reflecting as much of the light as possible around the room, minimising the amount of light fittings needed.
The image to the right is a residential bathroom in the USA. The use of windows allows a lot of natural light to enter the room, minimising the need for artificial light in the day. The locations of the lights are very important, note that there are ceiling spot light above the bath and sink, areas of the room that require illumination. This kind of light is called accent lighting, which is used to focus of specific areas of the room in order to make it stand out.
Screwless premium white Varilight switches have been used as the light colour helps to blend them with the walls, and make them part of the room.
The use of commercial 4 light ceiling spot lights, similar to those sold by Intalite have been adjusted in order to light the remainder of the room. If lighting is used effectively, then no shadows should be cast as light should not just be coming from one direction. This is where using a combination of different fixtures such as wall lights, ceiling lights and mirrors come in handy.
