- 1). Locate the two numbers in your ratio. For example, if a lawnmower says that you need 5 parts of oil for every 40 parts of gasoline, the two numbers would be "5" and "40."
- 2). Find the greatest common factor for the two numbers. This is the largest possible number that can be used to divide each of the two numbers in your ratio without resulting in a decimal or fraction. The greatest common factor of 40 and 5 would be 5, for example.
- 3). Divide each number in the ratio by the previously identified factor. 40 divided by 5 becomes 8 and 5 divided by 5 becomes 1. This makes the ratio 1:8, or one to eight.
