How to Set Up a Raffle for Bidding

    • 1). Select prize items for your raffle based on the expected turnout of your event. Small items such as gift baskets, mixing bowls, or $25 restaurant gift cards can be used for smaller events, while high-end items like televisions, large-dollar gift cards, or even cars should be reserved for large events where guests who can pay a higher price per ticket have been invited.

    • 2). Decide how many tickets you will be selling for your raffle where each ticket is a bid for a prize. While making it an unlimited quantity can work for both small- and large-dollar prizes, selling a limited of tickets at a higher price can encourage people to purchase a bid ticket sooner if they feel the prize items are worth bidding on.

    • 3). Select the price you want to sell the raffle tickets for; this will depend on the value of your prize items. T-shirt giveaways and other small items can sell at $1 or less per ticket, while $20 to $50 per ticket may not be asking too much if the prize is large and the event is a charitable cause. You'll need to ensure you can make back the cost of the item and raise money for the event.

    • 4). Plan when you will draw for prizes and how you will distribute them. Some raffles require a winning participant to claim his prize immediately, while others don't require the winner to be on hand--in which case you will have to notify the winner to arrange for the prize to be picked up.

    • 5). Place a table near the entryway of the event near the front doors for selling tickets in a clearly visible location as guests arrive. Have posters set up, if needed, to make the raffle table more visible. Keep pens on hand so guests can fill in their information on the backs of each ticket they buy before leaving the table.

    • 6). Set the prizes in an easy-to-see area so guests can look them over in good light and with room to see them. Put a bucket, fish bowl, or slotted drop box at each prize item to allow the guests to drop in their filled-out tickets to place a bid.

    • 7). Decide to use either a random drawing technique from each bid box to choose a winner, or let the individual with the most bids for any one item win that item.
