How to Build a Tomato Trellis
- 1). Measure your garden. You will need enough support (vertical) beams to cover the the size of the garden with beams placed 3 feet apart.
- 2). Saw the bamboo stalks into straight poles. You will need support beams, at least 6 feet high, to go around the garden's perimeter. Also cut three layers of horizontal beams to go along each side of the garden.
- 3). Place support poles every 3 feet around the perimeter of your tomato garden.
- 4). Drive the support poles into the ground by hammering the tops with a sledge hammer. The support poles should be buried about 5 inches into the ground.
- 5). Tie the twine in nonslip knots to securely tie the horizontal beams to the support beams. Install your first horizontal beam 6 inches from the ground, and the second and third layers 6 to 8 inches apart.
- 6). Tie the tomato plants loosely to the support beams. Continue to encourage your plants' upward growth until they begin to grow naturally along the beams.
