Flowering Plants Nonpoisonous to Pets
- Many flowering plants like hibiscus and hydrangea that are safe for humans can be dangerous for pets. If a pet eats a poisonous plant, it could experience symptoms such as vomiting, muscle tremors, kidney failure and even death.
- Many flowering plants are safe for pets. African violets, alyssum, camellias, roses and nasturtiums are among those that are nontoxic if a pet ingests them. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lists toxic and nontoxic plants on its website.
- Eating any unfamiliar item or too much of even a safe plant can result in gastric upset in pets. If your pet eats a flowering plant and becomes ill, contact your veterinarian. Bring a sample of the plant into the office. This can help the veterinarian better diagnose the problem and decide on an effective course of treatment.
