- There are more than 1,200 species of Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), which makes it one of the most diverse flowering shrubs in the world. It is a popular choice in gardens because of its easy propagation and large, attractive flowers. The plant produces flowers in a variety of colors, including white, purple and pink, and is known to change colors throughout the year -- an effect that is often due to the acid levels in the soil. The more acidic the soil, the more blue a flower will appear, while more neutral soils produce white and alkaline create pink. It is important to provide nutrient-rich soil, moderate water and at least a few hours of sun each day.
- The Aster (Eurybia divaricata) is a family of perennials that favor the warm weather and sun of Australia. Depending on the specific type, the flowers will open in early summer to late fall and are composed of small blooms. These blooms come in a variety of colors and styles. Once established, care is often minimal; carnations require an average of four to five hours of sunlight each day and prefer well-drained soil that is slightly alkaline and moist.
- Moss pink (Phlox subulata) is a low-growing specimen that produces blooms during the late winter and early spring. These flowers come in a variety of colors, the most common of which is pink or white. It is commonly used in gardens as ground cover in spots with bare soil and is a favorite in rock gardens. It is generally no more than 6 inches in height but will spread as much as 2 feet. To achieve optimum growth, it requires moderate water and full sun.
