Get in Shape for Summer with These Fitness and Weight Loss Tips
Bikini season is fast approaching in Chicago, especially when we have 90 degree weather in March. Never fear. There is still time to get in shape for summer. Check out these fitness and weight loss tips from Jennifer Hogg, Group Fitness Manager at one of Chicago's most exclusive gyms, Equinox.
HYDRATE!!!:
Extra H2O goes a long way in jump starting your summer shape-up. It helps to flush toxins and boost your metabolism all while making sure your body is prepared to train hard for you during your workouts.
Always start your day with a glass first thing in the morning – especially before the coffee!!!
CROSS-TRAIN:
Mixing up different types of interval workouts is the best way to get the most bang for your buck. Both cardio and conditioning in a fat blasting session such as Equinox's MetCon3, Whipped!, Tabata, and Major Black Dress can help shed pounds and boast metabolism. For example, in MetCon3, you do 10 exercises, alternating between strength and cardio, for 1 minute each. With Equinox's Whipped! class, you do two exercises, 30 seconds each, with a quick break between sets. Both workouts spike your heart rate while also getting in strengthening and core-shaping exercises.
CHOOSE AN EVENT TO TRAIN FOR – AND REGISTER!:
Since you’re cross-training, why not do a race or event like the Men’s Health Urbanathlon (not just for boys you know). Run through Chicago tackling urban obstacles along the way. Can be done alone or in teams. Another great way to stay on track – workout with friends (Hint, hint, YOUR TEAM!) and you’ll be swimsuit ready in no time.
And don’t forget to register; it forces you to commit. For ideas on running races in Chicago to train for, check out our list of 5K races happening in 2012.
GRILL:
Take the BBQ out of storage and remember: It’s not just for chicken and salmon. You can grill veggies and fruit (try pineapple & mangos), both of which are protein sources (Remeber: Plants have protein too.) and make colorful kabobs loaded with your favorites. (Tip: Getting healthy cooking ideas from the Whole Foods Market Lincoln Park's Wellness Club.)
TAKE IT OUTSIDE:
At least once a week, get at least one workout done outside. A run, a long walk with your best friend (and I mean Fido!), or a boot camp great outdoor activities. And the earlier the better. Shocking your system with a new workout time and change of scenery is sure to keep the motivation and energy high.
