Can Lesbians Have Crushes on Male Celebrities?

Dear Lesbian Life:
I'm 24 years old and I know I'm a lesbian, it's taken me a long time to admit it but I just really do know. Thing is, I still have a few celebrity crushes on guys like Sacha Dhawan (look him up and you will see why), Johnny Depp, Doctor Who's Matt Smith and David Tennant. These are the only guys who I would seriously turn at least bisexual for, not guys who look like them, I mean the actual guys themselves!

Other regular hot guys don't do anything really for me, I mean I can recognize their sexiness, but I don't really want to sleep with them or develop a relationship with them.

The idea of a relationship with a guy really grosses me out and makes me feel blah, as if it's just not right for me. I've always been this way, only liking a few celebrity guys (though these four are a constant) and no regular guys. Before I came out I would make excuses for it, but know I think it sort of proves that I am in fact gay, since I only want a relationship with a woman, who I can't wait to meet! So, do gay people have celebrity crushes on people of the opposite sex, or am I just really that much of a freak?

Dear Non-Freak:

I remember back in the 90s when Melissa Etheridge was just about our only out lesbian celebrity and she mentioned in some interview that she would turn for Brad Pitt.
The lesbians went nuts. How could she dare admit to being attracted to a man? She was our lesbian spokesmodel, after all!

But even I had to admit, there was something about Brad Pitt’s character in Thelma & Louise that even took my glaze temporarily away from Geena Davis.

The thing about having a crush on a celebrity is that it’s a fantasy. You’re never going to really have the chance to go straight for Sacha Dhawan or Johnny Depp. It’s just fun to think about.

It really isn’t that different than the celebrity “pass” that some couples give each other. You know, honey, I love you and am totally monogamous, except for Kate Winslet. If she calls me to her bed, I’m going. Pure fantasy and pure fun.

Sexuality and sexual attraction are all on a scale.

It’s totally normal for straight people to have occasional same-sex fantasies and the same applies for gays and lesbians. They can sometimes have fantasies and even crushes on the opposite sex and still be through-and-through homosexual.

So, don’t worry, you’re not a freak. You’re just human. And just admitting something that many people don’t.
