What Is an MSD Ignition?
- High performance engines are designed to emphasize high-speed horsepower by maximizing the ability to flow air and fuel at higher RPM. In so doing, they give up efficient operation at low speeds. The multiple sparks provided by an MSD ignition have a better chance of igniting a poor mixture than a single spark per cylinder, and this alleviates the low-speed miss that could otherwise occur.
- At higher engine speeds, there is only enough time for a single, high-energy spark. Fortunately, that is all that is necessary. The MSD ignition works the same at high RPM as any other capacitive discharge ignition.
- The MSD ignition is available for all non-computerized battery-ignition automotive engines, whether the engine has breaker points, inductive pickup or opto-electronic switching. Some of the more popular computer controlled engines are also supported, as listed on the MSD website.
