Am I Unisex or Asexual?
Dear Lesbian Life:
I am a 14 yr old lesbian. I know there are a lot of questions out there about sexand I have a weird perspective on the whole ordeal. I'm worried that it may make my sexual orientation different. In my opinion I think sex is disgusting whether its with a guy or girl. I do not find penis or vagina attractive. I think they're both disgusting. I'm afraid that this makes me a unisex. Please tell me what this makes me.
Answer:
Dear Wondering Teen,
I don't think unisex is the right word. Unisex is usually defined in terms of clothing or hairstyles and it means it can be worn by either sex. Like a jacket could be unisex.I think the word you’re looking for is asexual. Asexual people lack sexual attraction for either sex or have no desire for sex. This may or may not be you. Or it may be that at age 14, you are not ready for sex, physically or emotionally, and that makes you think of it as disgusting.
I’m sure I’ll hear from people who disagree, but I agree, sex organs are not that attractive. To look at them, penises and vaginas are not all that pretty. What makes sex organs attractive is the pleasure they give us, and emotions associated with giving and receiving pleasure with a partner.
Could you be asexual?
According to the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network, an asexual is "someone who does not experience sexual attraction." They describe asexuality as a sexual orientation, much like being gay, bisexual or straight. So, it is possible that you are asexual.
If you can’t see yourself having sex with men or women in the future, then you could be asexual. Just like gays and lesbians can know at a young age what their sexual orientation is, asexuals can know from an early age what their sexual orientation is too.
Even if you identify this way now and decide later that you are indeed a sexual person, that is fine too.
