ATV Safety for Beginners
Most of the things we'll cover are very basic, and stem from common sense, but they are also things that you can never hear enough.
- Make sure you are properly attired, both for the ride, and the weather.
- Be responsible. I know when you get around friends, and are having a good time, sometimes our judgement slips a bit. Don't show off, don't do tricks, it's an accident or a tragedy waiting to happen. I had a friend that was somewhat experience on his ATV, but was hanging around with a bunch of friends, and decided to try some crazy trick. He ended up tearing ligaments in his knee, missed about four months of work, and now is a convert to safe riding at all times.
- I can't believe I even need to say this, but never ride your vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You need control of all your faculties when riding--alcohol and drugs have a very negative effect on depth perception, motor skills, and judgment--all crucial elements of driving.
- Respect the trails/land you are riding on. If you are going to ride on private property, make sure you get the owners permission to do so. Be a good example for other riders--it will help the trails stay open for everyone.
- Don't litter.
- Respect wildlife on or off the trails.
- Consider taking a driver's safety course, or ask an experienced rider if he'll ride with you to teach you some of the finer points about riding.
- Find a group of riders that you can take regular rides with.
The bottom line is be respectful, be smart, and have fun!
