How to Make a 3-D Turtle
- 1). Roll one large piece of brown clay into a ball shape for the turtle shell. Make a smaller ball from green clay for the head, and four smaller balls from green clay for legs. You can also make a green tail and two brown or black balls for eyes.
- 2). Flatten the bottom of the brown ball to make the shell. Pinch the sides of the shell with your fingers until you have the desired shell shape. Most turtle shells look similar to flattened ovals, so keep that in mind as you shape the shell. Pinch all around the bottom edge of the ball to make a ridge on the shell.
- 3). Shape the turtle's legs and head. Make the head shape into a teardrop shape, with one end slightly narrower than the other. Make the leg shapes into rounded squares for feet. Roll the tail into a worm shape. Keep the eyeballs in ball shape.
- 4). Attach the legs, tail and head to the turtle with a small dab of water.
- 5). Use a shaping tool to add details to the turtle, such as a shell design. Mark the desired pattern onto the shell with the shaping tool. Poke two holes in the front of the turtle's head for nostrils. Press the eyeballs into the sides of the head until they flatten into circles.
- 6). Bake the clay on a cookie sheet in a 265 degree Fahrenheit oven. Bake the clay for 20 minutes per ¼ inch of thickness. If your turtle is two inches thick, then it will need about 160 minutes of baking time.
- 7). Allow the turtle to cool, then paint any extra designs onto the turtle, such as nails, a white dot in the eyes or additional colors on the shell.
