Becoming a Justice of the Peace in Connecticut

    • 1). Visit your town clerk to pick up a Justice of the Peace manual.

    • 2). Request a list of all the JPs in your local area from the Town Clerk. You may want to focus on those who are members of the same political party as you.

    • 3). Contact a local JP, and request a meeting. Prepare a list of questions for them so that you can find out what becoming a JP really entails. Try to get as much information as possible so you have a full picture of all of the pros and cons of being a JP in Connecticut.

    • 4). Enquire with your local party Chair. He or she will be able to give you information about whether there are any current JP openings, and if there are any specific criteria for becoming a JP with that particular party. You should also take the opportunity to state why you wish to become a JP, and describe any past experience or contributions to the party that may help your cause. Contact information for local Chairs can be obtained from the Town Clerk.

    • 5). Submit a letter to your local party Chair, outlining your qualifications, experience and reasons for wanting to become a Justice of the Peace.
