    • 1). Keep a finger on the pulse of technology. Refreshing your knowledge of new technologies can better help you cope with being away from home. The Internet, cell phones, video games and media players have improved significantly. Used correctly, new technology can significantly improve your morale through keeping you in touch with family or by providing a link to the outside world.

    • 2). Continue your education. Even if you're deployed, many free programs allow you to take college classes through distance learning. Learning how to do your job more efficiently as well as other training can help you become a more adept soldier. This may also help you to advance your career.

    • 3). Stay in good physical shape. Physical training is sometimes not enough to keep you in your best condition. Eating healthily and performing extra physical training on your own allow you to progress at your own pace. You will also get a leg up on the competition if you exercise more. Gyms are typically open to you for use on post. Other exercises, such as weightlifting or pick-up basketball, are not hard to find.

    • 4). Build mental and emotional toughness. The military can be a highly stressful environment whether you're deployed or stateside. Finding ways to stay stress-free is necessary to maintain your mental edge. Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best is a good way to not be disappointed. Stay in touch with other soldiers, friends and family for the boost of support you need. Visiting with counselors, chaplains and your superiors is also an option when others are not available to you.
