Is the Vegetarian Paleo Diet the Healthiest Diet?
A very long time ago, during the Paleolithic era, it seems that people ate better than we do now in modern times. They had no other choice than to eat 100% natural food without added chemicals. Some even ate foods completely raw without heat as fire was not always available. It is true that their life expectancy was 30-40 years, but certainly they did not die of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity or cancer. They typically died of starvation, disease deficiency, or were killed by animals, cold, or parasites.
The "Paleo Diet" is a new trend that first caught on in California. It involves a return to primitive man's way of eating when it was based on lean meats, fruits, nuts and seeds, and vegetables. Meats on the plan include venison, poultry, beef, fresh fish, and seafood such as clams, shrimp, and calamari. Fruits allowed on the menu are numerous and consist of apples, pineapples, bananas, oranges, grapefruit, peaches and grapes. From vegetables you can choose those that can be eaten raw like carrots, turnips, tomatoes, greens and okra. Your nuts and seeds might contain almonds, pistachios, macadamia nuts, and pecans.
Obviously, you should not eat anything from the modern human diet on the Paleo plan including foods produced beyond the beginnings of agriculture or anything processed. These include grains (bread, pasta, and rice), legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), dairy products, fermented foods, potatoes, salt, oil, alcohol, fizzy drinks, or soy. If you want to follow the vegetarian Paleo diet all you have to do is eliminate meat from the list.
You can create tasty and healthy breakfasts, dinners or a healthy Paleo lunch without a lot of effort. Because spices and certain sauces are allowed on the plan, your creativity is only limited by your imagination. How about having some saut©ed onions and mushrooms over fresh greens? Perhaps you could stuff some peppers with diced mushrooms and garlic? Don't forget the fruit for dessert! Berries, grilled pineapple, and sweet frozen grapes can make delicious alternatives to fattening cakes and pastries.
