Migraine Headache Cause & Cures
- The actual reason a person suffers from a migraine is not known. Certain things may trigger a migraine. Identifying what triggers your migraine may help prevent, treat and alleviate some of the symptoms. Women suffering from migraines commonly report having an attack before, during, or after a period. A major drop in estrogen is thought to be the contributing factor. Alcohol, beer, red wine, aged cheeses, chocolate, processed, Asian, or salty foods can trigger a migraine headache. Stress is a common cause for migraines. Changes in the weather, intense physical exertion, missing sleep, too much sleep, sun glare, perfume smells, and smoke can all be factors for a migraine headache. Not all migraine suffers have triggers. Migraines can come on for no known apparent reason. Several conditions may make you more prone to migraines. Having a family history of migraines, being younger than 40, and being female all can contribute to migraine risk.
- When a migraine starts, begin treatment immediately. Daily preventative medications can be used if you suffer from several migraines a month. Beta blockers can help reduce the number and severity of migraines. Certain antidepressants have been shown to help prevent some forms of migraines. Anti-seizure medications help to reduce the number of migraines.
Pain-relieving medications can help you once a migraine has started. The Mayo Clinic reports that triptans are the first line of choice for people who have severe migraine attacks. Triptans help relieve pain, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light. Triptans work exceptionally well for migraines. The downside is that they are expensive. Pills range from $21 to $26 a piece, with no generics available. Ergotamine is less effective than triptans but is not nearly as expensive. It helps for pain that lasts over 48 hours. Butalbital combined with aspirin or acetaminophen and can also include caffeine or codeine can be used to treat migraines. This medication can cause rebound headaches and withdrawal symptoms if used frequently. Narcotic medications can be used to treat migraines if you are unable to take triptans or ergot. Narcotics are used as a last resort due to their habit-forming nature.
Self-help and lifestyle changes can also reduce your migraine attacks. Muscle relaxation, good sleep patterns, rest, relaxing, and keeping a headache diary can all help with your symptoms. Always check with your health care provider before being any type of treatment. Your doctor will work with you to help reduce and relieve your migraine headaches.
