In the past, the Farmers Insurance Open, formerly Buick Invitational, was typically Tiger Woods' coming out party for the PGA Tour season. And after epic 2008 U.S. Open win on a broken leg over Rocco Mediate at the very same course, the Torrey Pines golf course has cemented itself in golfing lore.
Of course, no one could have foreseen the events that unfolded during the fall of 2009, when Tiger Woods was involved in a vehicle accident and the subsequent tabloid fodder of marital infidelities that unraveled for all the world to see.
As a result, Woods lost his number ranking, his wife, and a ton of credibility.
Woods is still trying to find his lost mojo, having re-tooled his swing once more. In the meantime, a number of young guns have stepped into the void the once invincible Tiger held, and one of them, Bubba Watson, returns to defend his title. Woods, meanwhile, is forgoing the 2012 tournament to play for a big appearance fee in Dubai.
The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course will take place January 26-29, 2012 (actual tournament dates).
The tournament always sports a strong field as the PGA Tour's West Coast swing hit's full stride, and again will feature hometown favorite Phil Mickelson. And then there's that monster-of-a-golf-course, Torrey Pines South: the Rees Jones beast that hosted the 2008 United States Open. It's the course that everyone wants to play, after watching the tournament on national TV, but one that no one can play, both ability-wise and literally. Getting at tee time at the popular municipal course is akin to striking gold (believe me from personal experience).
