Cant Find The Right Curtains? Make Your Own Today.
People are choosing to make their own curtains and it is important to understand just how large a task it is that you are undertaking making a pair of curtains cant be done in a day. Having curtains made for you or making your own curtains is a costly option to take; this is due to the cost of all the materials required and of course the cost of time if you choose to have someone make your curtains, rather than doing them yourself. If you have any sewing skills then you should take the chance to develop them if you have the time to dedicate to making your own pair of curtains.
You should be looking to spend at least 100 on your materials; fabric, lining, thread, and header tape when you are making your own curtains and that is if you are lucky to find your fabric at a bargain price. You will find that some fabrics are 30 a metre and if you are choosing one of those for your curtains then you could be spending a minimum of 300 on the materials for your curtains. As a general rule the more expensive your fabric is the better quality it will be though of course if you choose a designer fabric then you can expect to be paying for the name too. If you are making full length curtains which will hang from above your window to the ground then you will be looking at needing at least 8 metres of fabric but you could need more metres depending on the width of the fabric which you choose. You may be lucky enough to find a fabric which is as wide as half of your window and this means that you only need to buy fabric the length of the drop along with a little extra for hems and headers.
Finding the right colour fabric for your curtains can be very difficult and so you should take the time to go to your local fabric store or to your local market fabric stall to look at the individual fabrics. Shopping online for fabric isnt ideal because of monitor settings, the colours of fabrics will show up differently on different monitors and so you cant make an accurate choice in fabric. Some fabrics are quite thin and so you will require a blackout lining to ensure that light doesnt show through, especially if they are for use in a bedroom.
When you are making your curtains you will require a lot of working space, if you can clear a space large enough then it is important that you do so because it will enable you to ensure your curtains are straight for your measuring giving you much more accurate results. You will also need somewhere to set up your sewing machine along with somewhere to sit and carry out the hand sewing which is required. Making your own curtains in a small space can be a very difficult task however it can be very rewarding once your curtains are complete, knowing that you have made them. You will be able to tell your friends and family that you made your curtains and by making your own curtains you can ensure that no one else will have a pair exactly the same as yours.
