Five Household Things to Melt Snow Under Tires

    Hot Water

    • Bring 2 gallons water to a rolling boil over high heat. Remove the boiling water from the heat and allow it to cool slightly before bringing it outside. Do not use boiling hot water on the ice to prevent causing tire damage. Pour the hot water directly onto the affected area, allow it to melt the ice for 30 seconds and shovel away the melted ice and snow before attempting to move the vehicle. Continue to pour hot water over the ice until the vehicle is moved.

    Kitty Litter

    • Pour 1 cup kitty litter onto the ice and snow directly in front of the tires. Move the vehicle forward until the tires are on top of the kitty litter. Put the car in “park” and pour kitty litter on the ice directly behind the tires. Place the car into reverse and attempt to drive away. Continue to apply kitty litter to the affected area until the car is completely moved.

    Rubbing Alcohol

    • Pour one bottle of 91 percent rubbing alcohol on the ice around each of the tires. Allow the rubbing alcohol to melt the ice for three to four minutes. Break up the melted ice and shovel it away. Place a piece of cardboard behind each tire and attempt to remove the vehicle. The combination of the melted ice and cardboard provides enough traction to move the car.

    Epsom Salt

    • Sprinkle Epsom salt behind and in-front of each tire. Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, is a natural product distilled from water. Allow the salt to penetrate the ice for two to three minutes before attempting to drive the car away. Continue to pour Epsom salt on the ice around each tire until the car is driven away. Epsom salt does not damage any concrete, vegetation or dormant grass under the ice.

    White Vinegar

    • Melt the ice and snow and prevent future ice build-up by covering the ground around each tire with 2-inch layer of white vinegar. Allow the white vinegar to soak into the ice for two to three minutes. Shovel away the melted ice and attempt to move the car. Continue to pour white vinegar around each tire until the car is driven away.
