How Do I Remove the Lower Unit on a Johnson 70 HP Outboard Engine?
- 1). Set the motor bracket onto a storage stand so the motor is upright. Remove the two 9/16-inch bolts from the bottom of the cavitation plate -- the horizontal fin at the rear of the lower unit -- with a socket wrench and extension, and the two 11/16-inch bolts under the upper lip of both sides of the lower unit. The lower unit will drop slightly, perhaps as much as an inch.
- 2). Reach over the anode on the forward, top edge of the lower unit and push on the locking pin -- the first thing your fingers come into contact with, once inside the opening between the upper and lower units -- freeing the gear shift shaft. Push the shaft to the port side to release it from the lower unit.
- 3). Support the lower unit and pull the drive shaft splines free of the lower unit, keeping the lower unit upright. Lower the lower unit until the top of the lower unit clears the drive shaft, then move the lower unit as you will.
