My Carrier Infinity Heat Pump Won't Defrost Automatically
- 1). Unplug the outside heat pump unit.
- 2). Clear away any debris or snow from around the unit. Remove any obstructions to air flow. This may involve trimming nearby shrubs.
- 3). Unscrew the outer cover of the Carrier Infinity heat pump and set aside.
- 4). Use a broom or your hands to remove any debris not frozen to the compressor coil.
- 5). Defrost the compressor coil using free-flowing water from a garden hose or buckets of tap water brought from inside the home. Water should not be warm or hot. Extreme water temperatures will cause the compressor coil to crack. Tap water will take longer to melt thick ice but is safer for the heat pump compressor.
- 6). Dry the inside of the unit with a towel, paying particular attention to the compressor coil.
- 7). Plug in the heat pump. If the heat pump does not start on its own in five to ten minutes, manually turn the unit on from the thermostat.
- 8). Contact a service technician if the outdoor compressor continues to freeze, as this may be an indication of a faulty defrost control board.
