Artificial grass has made a big impact on many sports since its invention, but it's not just in the sporting world that it is proving popular. Increasingly fake grass is being used in residential and commercial housing environments as a low-maintenance and aesthetically-pleasing alternative to real turf. From a ground keeper's perspective, artificial grass is a god-send. Artificial grass has far less need for maintenance, and it is robust enough to stand up to average wear and tear at all times of the year.

The key to artificial grass's usefulness in sporting events is the fact that it can be played on in almost any weather conditions without much degradation. The condition of fake grass doesn't change through the game, so it is used for a variety of different game fields. There is also the added advantage that artificial turf pitches will not have bumpy, dry or muddy patches.

Although artificial grass lawns require extremely little maintenance, to get the most out of it in terms of look and longevity then some care is needed. Compared to maintaining a real lawn this maintenance is still very minimal. There are a few tools which can help a fake grass lawn looking great for longer, and these include a soft rake, a leaf blower, a hard brush and spray-administered herbicide product.

Most importantly, try to keep artificial grass lawns free of debris by brushing against the pile with a hard brush. If items like leaves are left on artificial turf for a long period of time then moss could begin to grow, so it's best to try to get rid of unwanted debris on the lawn as soon as possible to ensure against this.

Weeds can still find their way onto an artificial lawn, for example if seeds are dropped by overhead birds. If this happens and you are not maintaining your lawn you could begin to see weeds growing around the artificial turf, which can be removed by hand. You shouldn't get weeds emerging from the fake grass, as special membrane material is incorporated in the design specifically to prevent this from happening. A leaf blower or garden vacuum is a great way of getting rid of leaves and other items fallen from overhanging trees in the autumn season. Moss-control products can be bought and applied annually to stop the growth of moss.
