Top Features in Apple"s iWork for Mac
Editing tools should help you create text, images, and objects in a straight-forward way. This quick run-down should give you an idea of what iWork can offer Mac users.
The following are rated on a scale of Excellent, Good, or Poor.
User Interface, Task Panes, & Views: Excellent
On Mac, iWork offers a contextual side panel with editing tools galore. These tools intuitively change as the task or text you are working on changes.
Most users will find the interface for Mac to be well-designed and intuitive.
Text / Numerical Effects: Good
iWork offers a good Styles preset system, while also offering a full range of text editing tools.
Image Effects: Good
Image options include re-sizing, exposure, saturation, alignment, and more. This may be enough for the work you do, but if not, Microsoft Office offers more in this regard.
Paragraph Layout: Good
iWork '13 features plenty of paragraph layout options for aligning, spacing, and visually organizing your documents. If you need very detailed features in this regard, you can find a few extras in Microsoft Word instead.
Charts and Tables: Good
Chart and table presets and customizations are good, but you will find more options in Microsoft Office for Mac. To get an idea on what is offered, check out this iWork Tables resource from Apple including the links to similar topics at the bottom of the page.
Data Analysis: Good
Apple iWork's spreadsheet program, Numbers, does not include something like Pivot Tables in Microsoft Excel, but otherwise has a strong set of formulas and data analysis capabilities, including a useful interactive chart tool.
References: Good
iWork's reference capabilities are average but boosted by an optional EndNote plug-in for Pages.
Mailings: Poor
Mail merge, envelope merge, or other merge tools are not available in iWork '13. These have been removed. If you depend on these, start looking for a different suite.
Comments and Collaboration: Good
Microsoft Office used to be ahead in the comments category, but iWork '09 has caught up with functionality like more intuitive markup. Unfortunately, since this is not an online suite, iWork does not offer real-time editing with others.
Spelling and Grammar Check: Good
If you have loved how Microsoft Office handles spelling and grammar checks, take a look at this forum discussion about how Apple iWork can differ in this department. You may need to incorporate additional tools like SpellCatcher or Grammarian.
Complex Documents: Poor
Those creating involved files such as many legal documents or intense desktop publishing layouts should try a more robust office software suite. Again, in iWork '13, Apple's goal is to create a similar user experience with iOS devices. This means features have been reduced.
Print, Export, and Page Layout Options: Good
Apple iWork does offer average printing options. To get an idea, check out Apple's Pages Print, Export, and Fax resource. Options should be sufficient for most users.
