East Liberty - Neighborhood of Pittsburgh

106 57
Once known as Pittsburgh's second downtown, East Liberty was Pennsylvania's third-largest shopping district - just behind City Center Philadelphia and downtown Pittsburgh. In recent decades, East Liberty has experienced some of the decline and problems common to urban communities, but recently is enjoying a period of urban renewal.

Location:

East Liberty is located in Pittsburgh's East End, and is surrounded by the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Highland Park, Garfield, Larimer, Shadyside and Friendship.

Attractions & Recreation:

East Liberty is primarily an urban neighborhood, filled with office and retail space. A converted Nabisco bakery has Google as an anchor tenant. National retailers such as Home Depot, Broders and Walgreens, and women's clothing retailer, Anthropologie, fill new shopping complexes. Whole Foods and Trader Joes, along with a number of trendy restaurants and the oldest farmers' market in southwestern Pennsylvania, welcome foodies to Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood.

The visual and performing arts also shine in East Liberty, with venues such as the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater and the Pittsburgh Glass Center (on the border of East Liberty and Friendship), events such as the Art Cubed Festival, and a wealth of neighborhood murals.

Homes & Housing:

East Liberty is one of Pittsburgh's most historic and diverse neighborhoods. Homes in East Liberty, a popular neigborhood for college students at Carnegie Mellon and Chatham and young professionals, range from highrise apartments to townhomes to century-old Victorians.

During the past decade, over 1,400 high rise public housing units have been replaced with 450 new mixed-income units. New loft apartments are also a trend in East Liberty, including the Y Lofts condominiums in the former YMCA building, and the Spinning Plate Artist Lofts.

Most of East Liberty is represented by Pittsburgh City Council District 9, with a small portion in District 7.
