Signs of Canine Inner Ear Infection

    Causes

    • Inner ear infections are often the result of an infection in the outer ear that was not treated. Causes of ear infections include bacterial infections, fungal infections and parasites.

    Shaking

    • A common symptom of canine ear infections is shaking of the head in an attempt to dislodge the irritation.

    Scratching

    • Many dogs will scratch and paw at their ears when they have an ear infection.

    Balance

    • The balance organ is located in the inner ear, so dogs with inner ear infections may suffer from a loss of balance.

    Facial Paralysis

    • In serious or reoccurring inner ear infections, the dog may suffer from facial paralysis. Facial paralysis may be noted by droopy eyelids or facial muscles and protrusion of the third eyelid.
