Facts

• Pets with kidney or liver problems should not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Tramadol is an alternative. However, the manufacturer of the drug urges that it be used with caution in dogs with severe kidney disease.
  
  

Dosage

• Tramadol is not a long-acting drug so veterinarians generally advise that it be taken several times a day. Only a veterinarian can determine the correct dosage.
  
  

Side Effects

• Tramadol has few side effects. Upset stomach, constipation and excessive panting may occur.
  
  

Drug Interactions

• Pet owners should advise their veterinarian of anything, even vitamins and supplements, that they are giving the dog. Tramadol has been known to react negatively with Clomicalm, Prozac, Deprenyl, ephedrine and amitraz, which is an ingredient in some flea and tick collars.
  
  

Warning

• If your dog experiences swelling in the face, scratching, a sudden bout of diarrhea or vomiting, it could be a sign of an allergic reaction and you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
