How to Make a Navajo Blanket

    • 1). Warp the finely spun yarn by wrapping it vertically around the top and bottom of the loom starting at the bottom left corner of the frame. Tie a double knot at the end of the warp yarn around the bottom left corner of the bottom frame.

    • 2). Feed the warp yarn inside and underneath the top left side of the top of the frame, then over the top of the frame. Bring the yarn back down to the bottom, feeding it under the frame and over the top and back up to the top. Repeat all the way across the loom.

    • 3). When you reach the end of the loom, tie a double knot at the end of the warp yarn around the top right corner.

    • 4). Weave a dowel rod over and under the warp yarn. Feed it all the way through until every other yarn is either on top of or beneath the dowel, which creates tension on the warp yarn in preparation for you to weave in the pre-spun medium-thickness yarn or "weft" yarn.

    • 5). Push the dowel all the way to the bottom. The space between the front and back of the warp yarn is the "shed" and the shed above the dowel is the "natural shed." Feed the weft yarn from right to left all the way through the natural shed. Leave 4 inches of extra yarn sticking out past the right side of the loom.

    • 6). Weave the dowel rod above the weft yarn from left to right. Pick up every other warp thread opposite of the warp pattern you created in step 4. Twist the dowel rod sideways to open a new shed. Pass the warp yarn from left to right through this new shed. Repeat in the opposite direction, from right to left now, and repeat until you reach the top of the loom.

    • 7). Start a new color by stopping the yarn in the shed where you want to switch colors. Cut the weft yarn a few inches past the blanket. Let it hang from the back. Let the new weft yarn dangle next to the old one from the back and continue weaving. Do not tie the ends of yarn, since the weight of the blanket holds them in place.

    • 8). Remove the dowel at the bottom of the loom and cut each warp loop in half. Tie a double knot on each of the loops, then trim the yarn about 1 inch from the edge of the blanket. Repeat for the top of the blanket as well.
