What Do I Need to Paint a Car?
- To prepare your car for its paint job, you'll need a full arsenal of automotive cleaning supplies. The surfaces must be as clean as possible for the new paint to look its best. An oxide converter liquid can be used on any rust patches that can't be easily sanded off.
- For the best results, construct a paint booth for your project. This can be done simple by building a frame from PVC piping and using transparent plastic drop cloths to seal off the booth. A box fan can serve as an exhaust for the booth, and a damp cotton bed sheet will act as a filter. Use duct tape to seal off the booth. Mylar or other reflective materials can be used on the floor of the booth to reflect light and warm the space inside the booth, which will shorten drying times.
- The most important element of a painting project is the paint itself. Choose a primer, paint, and sealant that are all recommended for automotive use. This ensures that your paint job will stand up to the elements. Use a suction-feed spray gun and an air compressor to apply the paint. Follow all manufacturer specifications for drying times; working too quickly can lead to problems.
- Several other items are helpful in any car painting project. Newspapers and masking tape can be used to mask off the car's wheels, glass, and body trim as you work. Use household tools like screwdrivers and wrenches to remove items such as the side mirrors and other exterior accessories that you don't wish to paint.
