The city of Buffalo, New York, offers several outdoor and indoor activities for the January traveler. Pay a visit to the one of the oldest zoos in the United States, catch an NHL Sabres hockey game or show at HSBC Arena, or explore the city's numerous historic buildings, museums, shops, restaurants, and bars. - Head out to the Buffalo Zoo located on Parkside Avenue. Founded in 1875, the 23.5-acre zoo is the third oldest in the United States and showcases more than 1,000 species of animals from all corners of the globe. Experience gorillas in their natural rain forest environment and reptiles, including Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards, pancake tortoises and American alligators. Pay a visit to the zoo's Japanese macaque monkey and two snow leopards. The Buffalo Zoo has a gift shop, located at the Parkside entrance, that offers souvenirs, drinks and stroller rentals. The zoo is open in January from Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HSBC Arena also hosts concerts, ice shows, sporting events, and family shows throughout the year and has a seating capacity of 19,200. The venue features more than 14 restaurants, including three fine-dining establishments. Be sure to check out the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame display located in the Pavilion, and the Sabres Store, at 5,000-square-feet one of the largest in-arena stores in the NHL. Kids will enjoy a visit to Sabre Tooth's House before the game, a 400-square-foot playhouse that offers several fun interactive exhibits.
