How to Install a Sewer Pipe & Water Pipe in Concrete
- 1). Mark the starting location onto the concrete floor, which is the location where you will tee into the sewer pipe or water line and then mark the ending location onto the concrete floor, which is where you will install the drain or waterline fixture. Use chalk and place two marks at each end approximately 12 inches apart.
- 2). Snap a chalk line between each of the marks so you have two chalk lines the full length between the connection points approximately 12-inches apart.
- 3). Cut down each line in the concrete with a circular saw equipped with a masonry blade. If you choose, you can rent a walk-behind masonry saw and cut the concrete with that saw.
- 4). Break the concrete up with a 5-pound sledgehammer and then remove the concrete.
- 5). Dig the gravel and dirt out of the trench until you have a level trench as deep as the pipe where you plan your tee connection.
- 6). Cut a section of the original pipe large enough for the tee and couplers. If cutting into cast iron, use a cast iron cutter. If cutting into copper water line, use a copper pipe cutter. If cutting into PVC plastic, use a hacksaw. Once you cut the section of pipe, install the tee and couplers.
- 7). Cut a section of pipe that will extend from the tee to the location where you want the drain or pipe to come up through the floor. Attach the pipe to the tee.
- 8). Attach an elbow to the end of the pipe. If installing a drain, make sure the drain line pitches towards the tee. This means, the drain must rest higher than the tee in the existing pipe. If you are installing a water line, the pipe can remain flat.
- 9). Cut a piece of pipe and attach it to the elbow so the pipe extends up past the floor. If you are installing a floor drain, attach the floor drain to the elbow and position the drain so it will rest flush with the floor.
- 10
Fill the area under the pipe with gravel until the gravel rests just above the pipe. Backfill the hole with dirt until the dirt rests at the bottom edge of the existing concrete. - 11
Fill the remainder of the hole with fresh concrete. Level the concrete with a trowel and allow 24-hours drying time.
