How to Patent a Computer
- 1). Check the USPTO database to confirm no one has ever patented the same computer.
- 2). Download a customer number request form from the USPTO website, complete it and fax it to the Electronic Business Center at 571-273-0177.
- 3). Download the PKI subscriber agreement from the USPTO website to understand the policies of patent filing.
- 4). Download and complete the certificate action form after getting a customer number.
- 5). Have the completed certificate action form notarized.
- 6). Send the original certificate action form to:

You will get an authorization code and reference number by email and mail shortly. - 7). Sign in to the electronic filing system (EFS-Web) from the USPTO website using your authorization code and reference number.
- 8). Follow the prompts on the screen to file your computer patent, providing personal details and details regarding your original computer. Personal details include your name, email address and correspondence address. Invention details include title of invention, drawings, specifications and abstracts. EFS-Web will request a payment for the application using your USPTO deposit account, credit card or through an electronic funds transfer. Submit your application at the end of the process and wait for USPTO to respond.
- 9). Pay the issue fee and the publication fee if USPTO grants the patent. You will need to pay maintenance fees three-and-a-half, seven-and-a-half, and eleven-and-a-half years after you receive the patent.
